Interviewing Reading
Ethnography is important for learning about your audience in order to get data on what they say and what they do about the interaction. It can help graphic designers learn about an audience if they don't know much about them. A key point to interviewing are face-to-face- helps understand the same environment as participant.
Find right people to interview- on both extremes of spectrum to gain a perspective on who knows about idea and those who do not know about your idea.
Prepare- bring things to record interview, take notes on observations.
What the heck- observe moments when what people say doesn't match with what they do, things that are weird and allow you to see thinking of everyday people.
Be open- be curious and beyond obvious, don't tell participants you strong opinion, allow yourself to understand what they see.
Silence is ok- Be patient and allow participants to think when they pause, don't answer for them.
Focus groups- plan out questions, and have someone to lead the discussion, make the environment comfortable for the group, don't lead the discussion to a predetermined conclusion, empower your participants, be supportive but neutral, and ask questions one at a time.
